Google Play

Google Play screenshots and the feature graphic, from your App Store set.

If you ship to both stores, you've probably designed your screenshots twice. Screenpane starts the Google Play set from the one you made for the App Store: every screen laid out again at Android sizes, a feature graphic added, then exported in the layout fastlane supply expects or uploaded straight to Google Play.

What you get

Phone screenshots1080 × 1920Your iPhone and iPhone Duo designs
Tablet screenshots1440 × 2560Your iPad designs
Feature graphic1024 × 500Your App Store title and subtitle, to start

Phone and tablet canvases are 9:16, the shape Google Play needs to feature an app in its larger formats.

From your App Store set

Choose New Google Play Page from the switcher above the screens list. Every screen is copied and laid out again for its Android counterpart: iPhone designs become phone screenshots, iPad designs tablet ones. It's a real re-layout, not a resize, and a starting point: look over each screen and adjust what you like. Your App Store page stays as it was.

Frame them in Pixel devices (Pixel 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro, 9, 8a and Pixel Tablet) from the Device Bezel card, or use the flat, drawn frame style.

Capture from the Android Emulator

Press ⌘S in the Emulator and the screenshot lands in Screenpane. Screenpane watches the folder the Emulator saves to: the Desktop, unless you changed it in the Emulator's Settings › General.

With Android SDK Platform-Tools installed, Screenpane can also tell which emulator each capture came from and pick the matching Pixel frame, and clean the emulator's status bar while it watches: 12:00, full battery and Wi-Fi, no notifications, put back when you stop. Without Platform-Tools, captures still land.

Checked before it goes

  • The export sheet warns about a missing feature graphic, too few or too many screenshots, and files over Google Play's 8 MB.
  • PNGs are written without an alpha channel, as Google Play requires.
  • The issue list checks every language for overflowing or untranslated captions, as it does for the App Store.

Export for fastlane supply

Exports land in the Play Console's layout, the one fastlane supply uploads: a folder per language, named with Google Play's own codes (zh-CN, es-419, no-NO rather than Apple's), phone and tablet slots, and featureGraphic.png.

Or upload straight to Google Play

Set it up once with a service account key:

1. In Google Cloud, pick or create a project and enable the Google Play Android Developer API.

2. Under IAM & Admin › Service Accounts, create a service account. It needs no roles.

3. Open it, then Keys › Add Key › Create New Key › JSON. The file downloads.

4. In Play Console › Users and permissions, invite the account's email, add your apps, and allow Manage store presence.

5. In Screenpane, choose the JSON file in Settings › Google Play. It's kept in your Mac's keychain, so you can delete the download.

Then upload a Google Play page from the export sheet. The change goes to Google Play as one edit: either all of it lands or none of it does. Images go only to the languages your store listing has, since Google Play takes none for a language without one. If your app uses managed publishing, the change is saved in Play Console and waits for you to send it.

Questions

Does Google Play cost extra?

No. Google Play pages are part of Screenpane: £29 once or the monthly plan, after a 14-day free trial.

Does the upload use fastlane?

No. Screenpane talks to the Google Play Developer API itself, with your service account key. If you already upload with fastlane supply, export instead: the folders are laid out the way supply expects.

Does it upload only what changed, like the App Store Connect upload?

No. A Google Play upload replaces the images for each language your listing has. If anything fails, or you stop it, the whole change is discarded and Google Play keeps what it had.

Do I need Android Studio?

Only to capture your Android app from the Emulator. Screenpane watches the folder the Emulator saves screenshots to; Android SDK Platform-Tools, which comes with Android Studio, adds the device name and the clean status bar.

Where does my service account key go?

It stays in your Mac's keychain and is only ever sent to Google to sign in. There is no Screenpane server in the middle.
