What makes a good screen-1 headline

Many people decide from the search results, before they open your page. The first screenshot is the biggest thing they see there, and its headline does the explaining.

  • Say what the app does. In the plain words people type into App Store search. Not the app's name, which a stranger doesn't know yet, and not one feature.
  • Sell the whole promise. Screen 1 is the only one many people see. It carries the biggest benefit, and the screens after it prove it.
  • Keep it to 2 to 5 words. It has to read at thumbnail size in search results. Six words is the most.
  • Use a keyword if it fits. A word from your listing keywords helps when it reads naturally. Stuffed in, it reads like spam.
  • Only real numbers. A number is strong when it's true and specific. Never an invented rating, award or user count.
  • Skip the empty words. Easy, simple, best, ultimate, revolutionary: every app says them, so they say nothing.
  • Write in sentence case. Capitalise the first word and names only. It reads faster than Title Case.

Questions

Is the headline generator free?

Yes. Up to 10 sets of headlines a day, with no signup.

Do you keep what I paste?

No. The description and keywords are sent to Claude, Anthropic's AI model, to write the headlines, and aren't stored by Screenpane. We keep a count of requests and which suggestions get copied, without the text.

Which screenshot is the headline for?

The first one. It's what App Store search results show beside your icon, so it has to explain the app to someone who has never heard of it.

Make the whole set

Screenpane puts your headline on a real screenshot, in a device, at the size the store asks for, then translates the set. 14 days, the full app, no signup.
