A visual alternative to fastlane frameit.
fastlane frameit puts a device frame and a title around your screenshots from a config file, run from the command line. Screenpane does the same job on a canvas you can see, then translates the captions, checks the set and uploads it. Both start from your Simulator screenshots. If your screenshots are built in CI, frameit may still be the right tool, and this page says when.
How frameit works
You run fastlane frameit in your screenshots folder. It reads a Framefile.json for the background, the title and keyword text, fonts and padding, picks a frame for each screenshot's device, and writes a framed copy beside it. The frames download on first run from the frameit-frames repository. Localised titles come from title.strings and keyword.strings files you put in each language folder. frameit doesn't upload: fastlane's deliver and supply do that.
Two things in its docs catch people out. Titles only appear if you set a background. And screenshots framed without titles keep their full resolution, which the docs say means they “can't be uploaded to the App Store directly.”
How Screenpane works
Point Screenpane at your Simulator's screenshot folder. Each ⌘S arrives on a canvas already the size the store asks for, with a device, a background and a headline. Change the layout, the words or the device by hand and see it straight away; one design is reused across every size and language. When the English set is right, Screenpane translates the captions and your listing text into 36 App Store languages, lists anything that overflows or is still untranslated, and uploads the set to App Store Connect.
frameit and Screenpane, side by side
| fastlane frameit | Screenpane | |
|---|---|---|
| How you design | A Framefile.json per screenshots folder: background image, title, keyword, padding, fonts. Run the command, look at the result, edit, run again. | A canvas locked to the store's pixel size, with layers you move by hand: device, captions, background, badges, close-ups, shapes and images. |
| Captions | A title and an optional keyword per screenshot. Titles only appear when you set a background. | Headlines with highlighted words, in any font you import, plus 11 starter layouts to begin from. |
| Translations | You write title.strings and keyword.strings in each language folder, UTF-8 or UTF-16. | Translates captions and listing text into 36 App Store languages with your own OpenAI key. Refills only what's missing; your hand edits stay. |
| Devices | Frames from the frameit-frames repository, originally Facebook's device art: iPhone, iPad, Mac and a set of Android devices. | Its own bezels: iPhone 17 and 16 families, iPhone Air, iPad Pro 11″ and 13″, iPhone Duo, and Pixel devices for Google Play. No Mac frames. |
| Checking | Not part of frameit. | A live issue list: words that overflow, sample text left in, missing translations. Most have a one-click fix. |
| Uploading | Not part of frameit. The docs point to deliver for App Store Connect and supply for Google Play. | Uploads to App Store Connect with your own API key, sending only what changed. Uploads to Google Play with your own service account key, or exports supply's folder layout. |
| Where it runs | The command line, so it fits a fastlane lane on your Mac or a build server. | A Mac app with a window, on macOS 15 or later. Coding agents can drive it on your Mac through its MCP server. |
| Price | Open source, part of fastlane. | £29 once or £7 a month, with a 14-day free trial. |

When frameit is the better choice
- Your screenshots are generated and framed on a build server with no one watching.
- You already have snapshot and deliver lanes that work and a plain title is all you need.
- You need Mac App Store screenshots. frameit frames Macs; Screenpane doesn't.
- You want it free and open source.
When Screenpane is
- You want to see the design while you make it, not after a run.
- Your screenshots need more than a title: highlighted words, badges, close-ups, panoramas.
- You ship in several languages and don't want to write .strings files by hand.
- You want overflowing or untranslated captions caught before Apple sees them.
- You ship to Google Play too: one design is laid out again for Android phone and tablet, with the feature graphic.
Questions
Is Screenpane free like frameit?
No. Screenpane is £29 once or £7 a month after a 14-day free trial with no signup. frameit is open source and part of fastlane.
Can Screenpane run in CI?
No. It's a Mac app with a window, so it doesn't run on a build server. A coding agent such as Claude Code can drive it on your own Mac through its built-in MCP server.
Can I keep my fastlane snapshot lane?
Yes. Drag the screenshots snapshot made into Screenpane and design from those. For Google Play, Screenpane can export in the folder layout fastlane supply uploads.
Does Screenpane use frameit's device frames?
No. It draws its own bezels, including the iPhone 17 family, iPhone Air, iPhone Duo and Pixel devices.
